PRINCE Haywood is rated as Witton Albion’s biggest injury doubt ahead of a meeting tonight with fellow promotion-hopefuls Spalding United.

The midfielder limped off inside half an hour of a 2-0 win at home to Carlton on Tuesday after complaining of a twinge in his right hamstring.

Paul Williams, who had been rested by manager Carl Macauley, came on to play the remaining 60 minutes.

Goalkeeper Danny Roberts and defensive duo Anthony Brown and Matty Devine also had a breather 48 hours ago, and are expected to return to the hosts’ starting line-up.

Should Devine not be risked – the full-back has only recently returned following a hamstring strain – then Danny McKenna stands by.

Macauley told the Guardian he would have no hesitation in asking the 19-year-old, who has made almost 40 appearances for Runcorn Linnets in the North West Counties League this term, to deputise.

“Danny has been great for us,” said the Witton manager.

“He has so much composure for such a young player, and his crossing is always high-quality when he gets forward.

“He’s come in knowing what big games these have been for us in the context of our season, but we’ve been impressed with how he’s handled it.

“Playing regularly for Runcorn has obviously made a big difference to his development.”

Spalding arrive in Northwich third in the Northern Premier League Division One South table, 18 points adrift of Witton with six matches left.

Newcastle, in fourth, trail the Tulips by four points.

Chris Rawlinson’s men lost 2-0 at Stocksbridge last Saturday, although they had won four of their previous five games before taking on Steels.

The reverse in that run was against Albion.

Kern Miller was sent off at Steels, but his ban doesn’t start until this weekend.

Kick off is at 7.45pm.
