A DRAW with Buxton is better than beating them, according to Witton manager Tony Sullivan.

His side were 3-0 victors against the Northern Premier League title hopefuls at Silverlands in November, but the Albion boss says Saturday’s stalemate – earned after Danny Andrews cancelled out Ash Palmer’s opener – satisfied him more.

“My favourite result since I’ve been here,” was Sullivan’s verdict afterwards.

“I know we won at their place, but I think we saw this group’s DNA this time – that’s what a Tony Sullivan team looks like.

“Everybody around us in the table was probably looking at this game, particularly after Buxton had won at Skem last week, as one that might be too tough for us.

“But a draw reflects what happened on the field.

“Buxton are a very good side and we’ve shown them twice what we’re capable of.”

Witton’s reward is to edge further away from the Premier Division’s relegation zone, with fourth-bottom Matlock – their opponents next weekend – seven points adrift after losing 1-0 against Ashton.

Albion have now collected 17 points from the past 30 up for grabs, a stark contrast to ending the previous 10 league games empty-handed.

Sullivan said: “We had to make a decision whether to go for the jugular after equalising.

“Before the game we’d have said a draw is a great result, and it is.

“We were lucky at the end when they had a goal ruled out for offside, but I’d argue we had one that was questionable [in the first half] too.

“Our young lads will know they’ve been in a game, and they need to learn a little bit from an opponent like that.

“In the past we’ve been naive, inexperienced maybe, and lost games.

“But the dressing room is a different place now.”
