WINNINGTON Park were made to fight hard for their victory over league strugglers Sale on Saturday.

Trailing to their hosts at the break, Park rallied in the second half to produce 16 unanswered points and turn the game on its head.

The visitors had started the game brightly, dominating the lineouts and looking to threaten the Sale line.

But a mistake allowed Sale centre, Moorhouse, to break and collect a kick to touch down in the corner.

Park responded swiftly, winning a scrum deep in Sale’s half which saw James Gracey power through to come close, but Harry Stubbs was on hand to complete the move with Ben Elliot adding the extras.

Though Park were able to control possession and territory for the remainder of the half, further lapses in concentration let the home side slip through for two more converted tries, meaning Park went into the dressing room 19-7 down.

A stern word from coach Mark Warr at the break meant that Winnington emerged back on to the pitch with renewed determination and they began to fight their way back into the game on 50 minutes.

A move from just outside the Park 22 saw the ball travel through several pairs of hands before James Gracey used his quick feet to beat one defender, hand off another and sprint 65 metres to score between the posts.

Sale started to give away penalties in dangerous positions and Elliot took the chances as they came, slotting over three penalty kicks to edge Park into a narrow lead, which they held despite resistance from the home side.

Winnington face a tough task when they host fellow promotion rivals Tyldesley on Saturday.
