WINNINGTON Park ensured they will be promoted in style on Saturday after running up a record points total in a one-sided encounter with Port Sunlight.

They scored 17 tries, the first of those inside the opening 60 seconds, to put themselves out of reach for the third-placed team – Heaton Moor – in South Lancs/Cheshire Division Two.

“This game proves what you can do when you play simple, ball-to-hand passing rugby,” reflected head coach Matt Farr.

“We played some great stuff.”

Park were on course for a 22nd successive league win when scrum-half Jack Williams touched down in the first minute.

Teenager Will Morrillo, capped by Cheshire’s under 18s this season, was the next to cross the whitewash.

Winger Aaron Brown claimed the first of his four tries, and followed it quickly with another, before Danny Williams added his name to a growing list of scorers.

Brother Jack doubled his personal tally shortly afterwards.

However the best try of the game was scored by Jamie Pugh, who neatly side-stepped an attempt by two defenders to stop him before sprinting to the line.

Port Sunlight, on the wrong end of a 90-0 drubbing at Burrows Hill in December, put their only points on the board from a penalty awarded for a deliberate knock-on.

A final try of the half for Park, which pushed their tally past 50 points, was scored by replacement Ben Critchley.

Farr made the most of being able to use rolling substitutes in the second-half, and back-row forward Matt Treacy was the first to score after the interval.

He repeated the trick, this time following a fine run by hooker Andrew Evans.

Captain Dave Cross got in on the act before Critchley dotted down a second time.

Brown claimed another one-two to continue an impressive afternoon’s work before centre Lee Allmark piled further misery onto the home team’s decimated defence.

Treacy completed his hat-trick, and Allmark added a final flourish late one.

Farr added: “To score 17 tries in a single game is amazing.

“Mat Treacy was rewarded for his endeavours with three of those, and I was happy too for prop Mike Eaves who covered so much ground – he’s had a fantastic season.”

Park still need six points, from four remaining games, to claim the title.

A visit from Isle of Man outfit Vagabonds follows on Saturday, kick-off 12.30pm.
