WINNINGTON Park were not at their best, and nor did they need to be.

Matt Farr’s men recorded a sixth successive win that keeps them tucked in behind pace-setting Liverpool Collegiate – opponents they are scheduled to host later this month.

Their aim is to be in a position from which to overtake them by prevailing in that head-to-head at Burrows Hill.

A meeting with Orrell last Saturday again tested their adaptability in challenging conditions.

Progress was slow, and they ought to have fallen behind when the visitors missed a penalty early on.

However Park were less disjointed from the moment Danny Williams peeled off the back of a driving maul before touching down.

His teammates gradually assumed control, and Cameron Flanagan kicked a penalty midway through the half.

He repeated the trick when Orrell were penalised again.

A treble of three-pointers was complete after a high-tackle on Jack Williams presented Flanagan with another opportunity, which he duly took.

Park were dominant at the scrum, and during mauls, and moved further ahead when prop Shaun Underdown’s powerful surge up the wing yielded a second try.

Flanagan added the extras to make it 21-0.

First-team captain Dave Cross continued his phased return from a long-term injury with a cameo appearance as a substitute.

However the closing stages were untidy, with play stopped regularly for infringements at set-pieces in sodden conditions.

Underdown was shown a yellow card for failing to release an opponent on the floor, and an Orrell player received the same sanction moments later.

Park completed the scoring with time running out when replacement Joe Robins crossed after another maul.

Flanagan’s boot remained reliable, although Park ran out of time to claim a bonus-point.

Farr said: “We have to start games better, no matter what the weather.

“It was good to see us dominate in the scrum, and we’re beginning to realise how much strength in depth we have.”

Dukinfield are due at Burrows Hill on Saturday for a Cheshire RFU Bowl semi-final encounter.
