WINNINGTON Park hit the bottom of the table following an eight-try demolition at improving Bowdon.

The hosts scored six of those in the first half.

“We were never in it,” admitted head coach Roger Pickering afterwards.

“They were bigger and smarter than us, and it’s a real concern they were able to breach our defence so easily. We didn’t compete.”

His side have now lost eight of their past nine matches, and relegation to a lower level is a near certainty.

Park finished fourth in the same section last season.

They included three teenagers – new recruit Jack Phillips, Josh Brown and Dave Neary – from the start on Saturday.

However the visitors’ plans were disrupted when substitutes Chris Heptinstall and Ben Ridgway, along with prop Mark Taylor, sustained injuries.

After Lewis Pickering then hurt a wrist, they were effectively playing with 14 men for the remainder.

Michael Swetman kicked a penalty to put the home team ahead, and they scored a first try shortly afterwards when Lee Brennand touched down.

Swetman added the extras.

Tries from Liam Connolly, twice, Joe Harris, Stuart Lindsay and Swetman himself – who converted twice more – followed before the interval, establishing a 39-0 lead for the hosts.

Park were more resilient after the interval, conceding only twice more when Jonny Kennedy and man-of-the-match Harris crossed.

Winnington got on the scoreboard when Shaun Underdown drove over late on.

Pickering said: “The injuries didn’t help at all, because we were constantly disrupted.

“That shouldn’t hide our inability to tackle as a collective; we didn’t force Bowdon to make decisions when they attacked us.

“This was a young, inexperienced side, and there are things to be positive about.

“Jack [Phillips] showed real signs of promise, while Josh [Brown] covered every blade of grass.

“If they keep striving to learn and improve, then we’ll get better.”
