WINNINGTON Park’s new-found resilience on the field is earning reward.

A third successive win at Burrows Hill was the prize on Saturday, when Dave Cross scored a brace of tries to cancel an interval deficit.

It was windy, but Roger Pickering’s men refused to be blown away.

“It’s a victory that will give the lads belief,” reflected the head coach afterwards.

“Now we need to kick on from here.”

Park visit seventh-placed Sefton next Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.

And they will make the trip buoyed by their latest performance.

Defences on both sides dominated the first half, with newcomers Rick Cottrell and Dean Clarke forming a barrier that Wigan struggled to overcome.

The hosts’ cause was hindered by Mark Gately and Danny Williams being forced off with an injury and due to illness respectively.

Winnington tired in the closing stages, and their guests profited with a penalty and a try.

Park did not panic, and improved after the interval.

A period of pressure in the visitors’ territory brought dividend when Cross was pushed over the whitewash following a lineout.

Vice-captain Fraser Lindsay added the extras.

The contest was scrappy afterwards before the home team assumed control again in difficult conditions.

That extra effort made the difference, and slick handling in Wigan’s 22 moved the ball wide for Cross to barge his way past the remaining tackler.

Lindsay’s conversion from a wide position was perfect, and Park stubbornly protected their slender lead for the game’s remainder.

Pickering added: “It was a tale of two halves in the end, but we were organised in defence to secure what is an excellent win.”
