WINNINGTON Park won at Burrows Hill for the first time this season, bringing to an end their worst run of league results since early 2012.

Roger Pickering’s side, low on confidence after six successive defeats, turned on the style during the closing stages on Saturday to rise from the South Lancs/Cheshire Division One relegation zone.

“There were glimpses of our real quality,” said the head coach afterwards.

“The pressure of not winning since the opening day meant we were never fully relaxed, and it probably felt like a must-win encounter for the players.”

Despite Park dominating possession early on, it was the visitors who edged ahead when they converted a penalty.

Prop Shaun Underdown led from the front for Winnington with a series of strong carries moving forward and big hits when defending, supported by Conor Lapniewski and Ben Ridgway.

However the hosts did not break through until just before the break when Danny Williams punished a handling error.

He chased his own kick, winning a race to the line.

When skipper Harry Stubbs barged over from the base of a scrum early in the second period, Park had established a lead they rarely looked like giving up.

Hoylake added a second three-pointer, but it proved only a catalyst for Winnington’s best spell.

Lewis Pickering, after selling an outrageous dummy behind his own team’s 22-metre line, charged almost the full length of the field before he was halted just short.

However Stubbs, who had followed in support, scooped up the ball from the breakdown to claim his second score of the afternoon.

Park saved their best moment until last, this time when Elliot Alston and Lapniewski traded passes to cut a swathe through Hoylake’s defence.

Replacement Tom Witter, on his final appearance for the first team, added a finishing touch.
