Winnington Park 10 West Park 34

WINNINGTON Park could not follow up their derby success with another, conceding three second-half tries against West Park on Saturday.

The visitors produced a clinical performance to record back-to-back wins, and leave Roger Pickering’s men hoping to recover at the first attempt when they visit Liverpool Collegiate this weekend.

They fell behind after quarter of an hour against their St Helens-based guests, centre Liam Hill crossing the line between the posts after swapping passes with Matt Savage during a break down the blind side.

Savage converted, then added a penalty to make it 10-0.

Winnington rallied, although they failed to make their possession pay when a final pass went astray.

They did open their account following a moment of magic from captain Fraser Lindsay, standing in for Harry Stubbs, who evaded several attempted tackles on the right to touch down.

Jack Williams converted from out wide.

It was not a catalyst though, and Savage scored for West after their forwards recycled the ball.

The visitors were stubborn in defence when Park applied pressure, but the home team closed the gap when Williams kicked a penalty before the break.

However they were swept away afterwards.

Hooker Tom Williams went over for West following a raid led by Hill and Matthew Cozens, leaving Savage to convert.

Cozens added his name to the list of scorers, set up by Tom Fortune following Hill’s cross-field kick.

Kal Warburton completed the scoring, finishing a flowing move propelled by number eight Matt Potter’s burst.

Lindsay went closest to a reply for Winnington, almost producing a replica of his first-half effort.

However this time he was held up close to the line.

Both teams ended the contest a man down following a double dismissal, Alex Glendinning seeing red for Park following a fracas with an opponent.

“The second half was a non-event – we never looked like scoring,” said Pickering afterwards.

“It was a bad day at the office, but we’ve a chance to redeem ourselves quickly.”
