Winnington Park 2nds 24 Broughton Park 3rds 20
WINNINGTON’S seconds came close to losing a match they had dominated during the opening period, coming from behind to win from the contest’s final attack.
Trailing 20-17, a 12-man maul pushed the ball over the line before the referee awarded a penalty try.
Stephen Lowe converted to secure a seventh successive victory in North West Intermediate League Division Three South, leaving his side two points adrift of a promotion place.
Park will not have predicted the drama to follow when they led 17-3 by the break, scoring first when Lowe ghosted past a series of tackles before sending Mark Phoenix through to score.
James Johnson converted.
An untidy spell followed, but Broughton had only a successful penalty kick to show for their pressure.
Winnington scored again when Lowe burst through to touch down, Johnson adding a second conversion before slotting a three-pointer of his own.
The visitors to Burrows Hill rallied though in the second half, punishing their hosts’ sloppiness with two tries.
A third followed, this time converted, when their winger evaded weak tackles to cross in the corner.
Park pinched the points after Lowe’s precise kick set up a lineout in Broughton’s 22.
