Winnington Park 43 Liverpool St Helens 20

WINNINGTON Park scored six tries during a sensational second-half display at the weekend to become the first team this season to beat Liverpool St Helens.

Their guests at Burrows Hill had won their previous dozen matches in South Lancs/Cheshire Division One, but they could not halt a rampant home side.

A balanced opening period gave no clue as to what would follow.

Greg Smith kicked a penalty for LSH before winger Matt Cunliffe chased his own grubber to the corner to extend their lead.

Park replied before the break with a try from Lee Allmark.

Winnington, beaten in three of their four matches during November, resumed revitalised and ran in three tries in eight minutes after the interval.

Captain Harry Stubbs and fit-again Elliot Alston, who raced through a gap, set up Danny Williams to put them ahead.

Fraser Lindsay burst forward from the restart, off-loading for Lewis Pickering to claim a maiden try for the first team.

A bonus point belonged to Park when Shaun Underdown gained possession and sent the ball Lindsay’s way, the centre supplying a pass for Luke Cannings to out-run two defenders in a race to the corner.

Jack Williams converted.

By the time Lindsay added a fine interception try, again converted, Park led 29-8.

He kicked through the LSH defence shortly afterwards, collecting the ball to score again between the posts. Williams’ boot added the extras.

The visitors, shell-shocked, responded when Cunliffe ran in from distance.

Will Burgess, the only member of Park’s current squad to have played in an 83-5 defeat against the same opponents almost eight years ago to the day, was unselfish to send in Jack Williams unopposed another converted try.

Smith claimed his second score of the afternoon at the other end, adding the extras, to complete the scoring.

“That performance was one of the best I’ve seen from a Park first team in all the 16 years I’ve been involved,” said chairman Brian Concannon afterwards.

“LSH have overpowered opponents this season, but we beat them at their own game.”
