Winnington Park 94 Douglas 3

LUKE Cannings, making his home debut, was the star on a history-making afternoon for Winnington.

The 17-year-old became the first player in Park’s history to score six tries in a game, inspiring the hosts to their biggest ever league victory.

With it, the Burrows Hill outfit preserved their perfect results record to date this season.

Lee Allmark scored the first of 14 tries by the hosts, converted by Jack Williams, then Danny Williams tempted out a covering defender before sending in Cannings for his first try.

The winger’s second, Park’s third, ran a perfect line between tacklers after Matthew Cross had picked up a recycled ball from a Winnington scrum.

Cross then swapped passes with Allmark to touch down try number four after he had taken a tap penalty.

Chris Heptinstall was next to go over, accepting Harry Stubbs’ pass before beating a Douglas winger to score in the corner.

Cannings claimed a stunning solo try to complete his hat-trick, sprinting clear from Park’s 22 to the other end of the field with no opposing player able to stop him.

At the start of the second half, Fraser Lindsay ran from halfway to score after Winnington had stolen the ball at a scrum.

Next, Cannings swelled his personal tally to five; first, with a hand off followed by a burst of acceleration, then making the most Shaun Underdown’s clever off-load.

Park did not relent, increasing their points total further when Stubbs and Danny Williams combined before finding replacement Tim Charlton in space to finish off a flowing move in the corner.

Stubbs got in on the act following a trademark raid through Douglas’ beleaguered defence, as did Jack Williams when he took possession from a ruck and darted down the blindside.

After stepping away from two would-be tacklers, he touched down under the posts.

Canning set a new club best when he took his tally to six before the final whistle, though Lindsay – increasing his season tally to half a dozen in four appearances – claimed a one-sided contest’s final try.

Jack Williams converted a dozen.
