South Lancashire & Cheshire Division One
Orrell 24
Winnington Park 29

WINNINGTON, who ended a run of six successive away defeats in January, have won on three of their past four trips following this latest success.

They close to within two points of the table’s top half as a reward.

Orrell, playing only their fourth match since the turn of the year, replied to Sam Brookes’ early penalty with a try scored by Chris Owen after he intercepted a loose pass.

The same player converted, slotting a penalty soon afterwards to leave the visitors seven points in arrears.

Winnington dominated possession, and with it territory, after that until Harry Stubbs carried the ball into opponents’ territory before Alex Evans touched down.

Coach Mark Warr shared stern words with his players during the interval, their response a try by Lee Allmark after he charged down an attempted kick clear.

Brookes converted, repeating the trick after Dan Williams had scored soon afterwards following persistent pressure by the visitors’ forwards.

Winnington did not relent, adding a fourth try when Cheshire under 20s cap Shaun Underdown crashed over from close range, Brookes adding a third set of extras for his team.

Orrell rallied to make the result more respectable, Owen converting tries by prop John Cassidy – a maiden try for his club’s senior team – and then Hugh Bloor in stoppage time.

Park, now with seventh-placed Wigan in range, host high-flying West Park at Burrows Hill this weekend, kick off 3pm.

They host a lunch for past players before Saturday’s encounter, with organiser Andy Fuller hopeful a crowd of former teammates will eat together at Burrows Hill from 1pm.
