ANDY Preece praised his players’ improved form following their friendly reverse against Accrington Stanley on Saturday, which marked the return of Wayne Riley.
The Northwich manager told the Guardian he felt happier after seeing a different version of Vics to the one blown away by Stockport County in midweek.
“For us to come from where we were against Stockport to where we were in this game is good in the space of four days,” he said.
“Obviously having people like [Michael] Connor and [Wayne] Riley back helps.
“But I thought the players did well, particularly in the first half.
“I hope the fans could see some progression with us bringing in John McAliskey and Ollie Ryan up front and that gives us something in the final third.
“We weren’t as on the back foot as we have been in the other two games and we caused them one or two problems.
“That’s encouraging.”
Stanley scored three goals without reply – two of those in the last ten minutes – to register a deserved victory.
Ray Putterill’s volley set them on their way on 53 minutes, then substitutes Rory Boulding and Michael Jukes found the net late on.
Preece threw on Riley – who only returned from holiday hours earlier – for a second half cameo.
“We still know there are positions on the field that are not sorted yet,” he said.
“But the efforts to bring people in to fill those will carry on until the season starts.
“If we can get a couple more in over the next few days to play the next two friendlies then that will hopefully solve a few more problems.
“It’s taking a little longer than maybe we would like but we’re calm.”
Vics return to action at Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division outfit Bacup Borough tomorrow, Tuesday, kick off 7.30pm.
