Mark Danks' five-goals haul wins him FA Cup prize

FOOTBALL fans have picked Northwich Victoria forward Mark Danks as the FA Cup second qualifying round’s outstanding performer.

He scored five goals in his team’s 8-0 rout of Leicestershire amateurs Bardon Hill Sports, setting up a clash with UniBond League outfit Chorley this weekend.

The 25-year-old, nominated by former Republic of Ireland World Cup star Andy Townsend, received 33 per cent of the votes cast by supporters on the Football Association’s official website, pipping FC Halifax Town shot-stopper Jonathan Hedge to top spot.

Flroan Pelecaci (Bath City), Michael Tait (Blyth Spartans) and Kevin Slack (Bishop’s Sleeve) were also in the running.

Danks will receive an E.ON Player of the Round trophy before kick off tomorrow, Saturday, and two VIP tickets to this season’s FA Cup final which takes place at Wembley in May.

Danks is the first Northwich man to win the prize since history maker Paul Brayson back in November 2005.

The Geordie striker became the first player to top the fans’ poll twice in the same season after scoring hat-tricks against Frickley Athletic and Morecambe on Vics’ magnificent run to the third round proper.

There they succumbed to Premier League giants Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
