NORTHWICH Rowing Club will be represented on the second day at Henley Royal Regatta after their men’s coxless four won a thrilling opener on Wednesday.

George Lawton stroked a crew, which also included Harry Taylor, Finn Lawton and Joe Anderson, that edged out rivals Lea Rowing Club by half a boat-length following a lung-bursting sprint to the line.

They will take on London Rowing Club, a selected crew that were comfortable victors against Quintin Boat Club, tomorrow morning in the Wyfold Challenge Cup last 16.

Meanwhile a Northwich junior quad of George Crouchley, Kevin Dudley, Rhys Coffey and Josh Burke narrowly missed out after another close race in the Fawley Challenge Cup.

They trailed Westminster School for most of their head-to-head, the penultimate race of the day on the famous 2,112m course, before mounting a late recovery.

The boats were separated little more than half a length by the finish-line.

A number of familiar faces to members at Northwich were also in action on the prestigious regatta’s opening day.

Tom Asteriades stroked an Oxford Brookes University men’s eight to victory on their Temple Challenge Cup bow, eliminating Imperial College London.

In the Prince Albert Challenge Cup for men’s coxed fours, Leon Langmead sat in the stroke seat of a Durham University crew that resisted the challenge of their rivals from Edinburgh.

Ed Grisedale, who represented Great Britain at the World Rowing Junior Championships in 2011 while with Northwich, was part of a Taurus men’s four that proved too strong for their London Rowing Club counterparts in the Visitors’ Challenge Cup.
