BETH Willford-Dutton will return to international action wearing Great Britain’s colours this weekend after being selected to take part in the European Rowing Junior Championships.

The 18-year-old, a member at Northwich Rowing Club, is one of only three female scullers named in the British squad.

She will contest the women’s double scull with Lucy Edmunds (York City Rowing Club) at a two-day regatta at Krefeld in Germany.

“Beth will gain invaluable experience,” said Rachel Hooper, the teenager’s coach at Northwich.

“Finding a balance between being a full-time athlete and keeping on top of her studies is incredibly challenging, but her determination to succeed is evident whenever she trains.”

Willford-Dutton, a student at Sir John Deane’s College, was part of a 32-strong team for the Munich International Regatta earlier this month.

She took silver as with a junior women’s quad, and third at the end of the C final with Kate Lyster (Isle of Ely) in a double.

The same duo were third in their heat the following day.

Willford-Dutton had made a medal-winning debut for Great Britain on the European stage as part of a women’s eight at last year’s Coupe de la Jeunesse.

Hooper added: “It is Beth’s final year as a junior, but her aim is to move into the senior ranks and continue her international career.”

The European Rowing Junior Championships starts on Saturday.

Three heats for the women’s double are scheduled for the morning following a draw on Friday afternoon.
