LUCY Burgess was among those hoping to impress selectors for the British rowing team during a new season’s first assessment at Boston over the weekend.
And the former Northwich Rowing Club star, representing Leander Club, managed it too after ranking sixth in the open-weight women’s single scull during a 5km time trial on the River Witham.
She stopped the clock in 20.21.85.
Meanwhile Lucy Gillbanks, now studying at Nottingham University after representing Northwich at Henley Royal Regatta earlier this year, was 12th fastest in the lightweight women’s single.
Her time, 21.16.86, was the fourth fastest among under 20s rowers in a 36-strong field.
Former Grange School Rowing Club member Tom Ford, also competing in Leander’s colours, classified sixth in the open-weight men’s single scull.
Ben Holt, another that learned to row at the Hartford school, and ex-Sir John Deane’s College student Leon Langmead – now studying at Newcastle and Durham university respectively – were in action too.
Ex-Grange student Matthew Roe and Sam Harte, another to have rowed previously for Northwich at Henley, were part of the lightweight men’s field.
Nearly 250 rowers took part across six categories, completing a 2km ergo test on Saturday before a time trial the following day.
