DAVE Wilkinson has claimed Weaver Valley Cycling Club’s Guardian Cup.

A newcomer, he collected most points over 10 rounds – all featuring a 10-mile time trial – to pip Richard Munro to first place.

And Wilkinson completed the campaign in style, clocking a personal best of 28.03 to finish two points clear.

Steve Marlow was third overall.

Kevan Underhill represented Weaver Valley at the TLI Cycling National Road Race Championships on Sunday.

Contesting the men’s over 55s age category over a 50-mile course at Audlem, he finished in the bunch behind a three-man break led by victor Roy Holmes (Bott Cycling Team).

Weaver Valley’s Ewart Howkins crossed the line with the bunch in the men’s over 60s class, won by Steve Jolley (Onimpix Bio Racer Racing Team).

Underhill had warmed up for the weekend by taking part in the latest Super 6 Race Series round over 30 miles at Pimbo on Thursday.

He was fifth overall, first in his age category, following a sprint finish won by David Kent (St Helens CRC).

Emily Martin was happy with her first attempt at a criterium road race on Saturday, when she ranked third in a field of more experienced riders.

The Weaver Valley novice headed north to the Cycle Sport Pendle event, where two riders broke clear following the second sprint prime.

She attempted to close the gap, but without help from rivals in the bunch, and rode solo for seven laps to reach the finish 17 seconds adrift of the leading pair.

Charlotte Gorman (Bury Clarion) took first prize after completing 29 laps.
