GREG Mairs, from Northwich, had a birthday to remember after helping Loughborough Sport to a convincing AJ Bell National Badminton League victory on Monday night.
The fixture coincided with him turning 21, and the hosts celebrated in style with a 4-1 victory over Team Derby β opponents who beat them in the inaugural final in June.
Unbelievable day yesterday! Big 4-1 win for @LboroSport against last years @NBL_official winners π happy to win the mx with @jennymoore95 π

His teammates had already ensured they would climb to the top of the table by the time Mairs and mixed doubles partner Jenny Moore won the final rubber in straight sets, a triumph preceded by the crowd singing to him.
βIt was really nice that the fans gave me a little song before we started,β said Mairs.
βI know a lot of them, and it does motivate you."
Mairs and Moore live together at Loughborough University as well as being a regular mixed doubles tandem, but recognise there is still plenty of room to improve their partnership.
The duo are in Milan this week for the Yonex Italian International, which runs until Friday.
And Mairs, a former student at Weaverham High School, added: "We' are trying to get better every day.
"Once we've finished studying, we'd like to compete full time and become one of the top pairings in the country.
βWe've a tough draw in Italy; if we make the second round we'll meet the top seeds.
βThey are playing well, so we will start as underdogs and can play with no pressure."
