MARK Wakefield ended a successful MINI Challenge UK campaign in style on Sunday when he won the season’s last race.

The Weaverham teenager stood on the podium’s top step at Snetterton, adding to victories at Oulton Park and Rockingham – a first since his debut last year – earlier in 2015.

It secured for him third place overall in the drivers’ standings.

“That was probably Marks’ best meeting of the year – he was chuffed to sign off like that,” said dad Nigel.

Wakefield has confirmed already he will step up to the series’ top tier in 2016.

Once built, his Gen 3 F56 machine will be prepared for racing by British Touring Car Championship squad Team Dynamics.

He produced his best qualifying result of term in his Cooper class model at the Norfolk circuit.

A best lap of 2.23.066 earned for him fifth place on the grid for Saturday’s opener.

He improved to second spot by the time the chequered flag fell.

As a reward for setting the fastest lap, a 2.21.028, he started the second sprint from pole position the following day.

Wakefield was third, then secured a victory in the finale after squeezing past Max Bladon during the closing stages.

He ends the campaign with 11 podium finishes, including the three wins, from 19 races.

“Mark can’t wait for the next challenge,” added Nigel.

“We’ve started to think about the 2016 season already, and are talking to potential sponsors.

“Hopefully the new car will be delivered by the end of the year, then we can arrange when to go testing.”
