EMILY Ford, part of Great Britain’s women’s four, attempts to win a medal at the World Championships for under 23s in the final tomorrow, Saturday.

The former Grange School student helped her crew to a convincing victory in a repechage on the water at Plovdiv, in Bulgaria, on Friday morning.

The British quartet, completed by Melissa Wilson, Holly Hill and Sam Courty, looked strong in the first half of the race as they established a clear lead over New Zealand.

It’s an advantage they maintained until the finish, crossing the line first in 6:42.34.

Ford and her crewmates had finished third in the regatta’s opening race the previous morning, again after edging ahead during the first 500m.

However rivals from Canada and defending champions United States pulled clear during the second half, the former taking the only qualifying place.

The British boat timed 6:45.40, faster than everybody – except winners Australia – in the other heat.

Ford, a student at Newcastle University, returns to the water at 2pm on Saturday for the final.

“We’ve had a good day,” said Sir David Tanner, performance director for GB Rowing.

“All of our boats have progressed to the next stage, with four of them reaching A finals.

“Those boats in particular have stepped on to achieve that, which is impressive.”
