GRANGE School bowed out of the Fawley Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta following a gallant effort against German opponents.

Their junior men’s quad, stroked by Scott Ozsanlav-Harris, kept to within a length of Frankfurter for most of their last 16 battle.

However the Hartford school’s rivals pulled clear in the final 500m to win by a comfortable margin.

Matthew Roe, Jonny Glover and Matthew Strickland-Baker completed the Grange crew.

They trailed in the early stages following a swift start by the Germans, who had qualified for the second round after eliminating Tiffin School on Wednesday.

When a gap between the boats crept to more than a boat-length at halfway, they responded.

But they could not do so again when Frankfurter found an extra burst of speed when entering the enclosures section of the course.

“The guys gave it everything,” said Grange coach Matt Jump afterwards.

“They sculled beautifully, but just didn’t have anything left in the tank when the Germans pushed on again.

“They’re disappointed, though they shouldn’t be.”

Neighbours Northwich will race for the first time at this year’s regatta, also in the Fawley Challenge Cup second round, against Leander Club B later on Thursday.

Sam Harte, George Lawton, Leon Langmead and Harry Blake are one of the seeded crews in the draw.

They will be on the water shortly after 5.30pm.
