Lytham St Annes 2 Winnington Park 0

WINNINGTON Park’s return to action in North Men’s League Division Two West was an unhappy one after a defeat at Lytham on Saturday dragged them into a relegation battle.

A long winter break, coupled with strong winds, resulted in poor quality hockey from both sides.

The visitors battled hard to restrict the home side to half chances and, playing on the break, won two short corners of their own that they failed to convert.

Winnington threw men forward in the second half when they tried the break the deadlock, but it was Lytham who capitalised on sloppy marking to take the lead.

They doubled it shortly afterwards from a powerful strike at a penalty corner.

Park came to life late on, creating a number of chances. Pete Evans went closest.

They host fellow strugglers Northern on Saturday at 2pm.
