Schools take part in National Sport Week

CHILDREN in mid Cheshire were inspired by sport over the past seven days.

More than 8,000 youngsters from schools in Middlewich, Northwich and Winsford were active in events organised to mark National School Sport Week.

Backed by the Youth Sport Trust and Lloyds TSB, the programme aimed to tempt children to try sport outside of their regular PE lessons.

“More than 50 primary and high schools took part,” said Chris Story, development manager for Vale Royal School Sport Partnership.

“It was a huge success.”

He said the most popular events were the annual Northwich Town Sports meeting, where 17 schools sent teams, and morning wake n’ shake sessions.

Others, like Wincham Community Primary School, joined the Golden Mile Club – a break from classwork to walk, jog or run around a pre-laid course on the school field.

Nationally more than three million children from 10,000 schools signed up to take part, taking inspiration from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Guardian sent photographers Nick Jones and Geoff Statham to events across mid Cheshire during the course of National School Sport Week. They captured the best of the action on camera. To see a selection of their shots, click here.
