Vale of Lune 43 Winnington Park 17

Winnington came out of another bruising encounter with heads held high but a lack of quality and crucial injuries took its toll.

Park lost Rob Garbett to a suspected broken ankle, Will Burgess was knocked out after taking an accidental boot to the head and Harry Stubbs played through the pain barrier with a shoulder injury, which meant Park's resources were stretched and they played most of the last quarter with 14 men.

In what has been an extremely punishing season, Winnington travelled north knowing a win was priceless but sadly they came away with nothing. The home side have invested heavily and recruited three players in an attempt to avoid the drop and on Saturday's evidence it looks good business.

Park started slowly and their inability to take kick offs cleanly cost them dearly in the first half.

Within the first 10 minutes they were 14-0 down.

A further score by winger Jones took the score to 21-0 and the away team were chasing the game.

Park had their chances and Neil Welch, who was outstanding, and Carl Patterson, both went close in a disappointing first half.

Park threw caution to the winds after the break and scored an early try through the ever improving Ryan McKibbon.

Sadly the comeback did not last for long as the next kick off was dropped and Vale immediately hit back for a 29-5 lead.

Winnington never gave up and two further tries, through McKibbon and Robbins, were reward for dominance in possession and territory.

But finally the injuries and changes took their toll and two further tries gave the home side a flattering 43-17 scoreline.

Park know that unless four wins come from the remaining games, including a derby with Northwich, and Vale only pick up one win there is little chance of retaining their league status.

Player coach Mark Warr and skipper Mark Patterson both know that no complaints can be made on this front and if they do go down it will be despite fighting all the way.
