NORTHWICH 2nds bowed because they were the home side.

Cup rules dictate that in the event of a draw the away team take victory, but Blacks at least preserved their unbeaten record in all competitions this term.

Kiwi James Gwynne was the only regular first team player on display for the hosts as the second string were given the premier slot on President's Day and, despite atrocious conditions, played their part in an entertaining encounter.

And Gwynne showed his finishing power when he scored after five minutes following a fine break from stand-off Ricky Evans, who converted the try to give Northwich a 7-0 lead.

They appeared to be in control until Gareth Hones' interception try, converted by James Robinson, pulled Tyldesley level.

Coach Don Birtles rang the changes at the interval, bringing on Chris James and Dave Farley to counteract the visitors' forward power.

But not even they could prevent Tyldesley's mauling domination which led to a second try by Paddy Littlewood.

Robinson missed the conversion and from then Blacks gritted their teeth and fought back when James supported another Gywnne break to score in the corner.

Evans was unable to improve the try as Tyldesley held on to go through.

Northwich: Stanley, Steventon (Gough 60), Cornes, Phillips, Shimmin (James 40), Heath (Farley 40), Harvey, Leggot, Bell, Evans (Taylor 65), Naylor (Lawler 45), Williams, Gywnne, Galbraith, Chubb.

This weekend: v Bowdon 2nds (h).
