Division One: Review of the Week

THE tension is rising in all divisions of the Cheshire league as the race for the title hots up and relegation looms large for those marooned at the bottom.

Midweek results did not favour top side Pilkington as they drew 2-2 with Crosfields before losing 2-0 at home to champions Middlewich Town.

However, the league is full of twists and turns as Middlewich went on to lose 2-1 at home to fierce rivals Barnton on Saturday in a highly competitive fixture.

Greenalls Padgate St Oswald may feel their chances of winning the title are slipping out of their grasp as they lost 5-2 in an eventful game at Knutsford.

The home side took the lead but Greenalls brought the sides level just before the break when Rob Hanley scored from the spot.

Fergus Morris put them ahead in the 55th minute but then disaster struck as Greenalls were reduced to nine men and Knutsford took control, scoring four goals to go on and win the game.

A 3-0 midweek win over Linotype Cheadle Heath Nomads saw Curzon Ashton Reserves climb into third spot as they keep one eye on a second piece of silverware having already won the JB Parker Cup.

Pilkington remain top of the table and six points clear of second place Styal, having played five more games.

Curzon Ashton are nine points behind the leaders, with three games in hand. Greenalls also sit nine points behind but with four games in hand.

Middlewich Town are 14 points behind the leaders but have six games in hand.

The title race has never been so open and with four weeks left of the season, anything is possible.

At the bottom things are also looking tight as second Rylands stormed to 3-1 win over wooden spoonists Poynton.

This was an important victory for the Warrington side as it now puts them within two points of safety as Trafford Reserves sit third from bottom.
