BOYS and girls from schools in mid Cheshire enjoyed a coaching session from some of rugby’s rising stars.

Members of the Argentinian under 20s team were on hand to give tips and advice to more than 200 aspiring players at Moss Farm last week.

Northwich Rugby Club hosted the event and junior coach Ian Grassby spoke about its success.

“We were taken aback really with how involved the Argentina team got with it, they were absolutely superb,” he said.

“It was great to see the whole team turn up with their coaches; they caused absolute chaos if we’re being honest!

“They were really nice lads though and the kids absolutely loved it. They went home with selfies, autographs and lots of memories.”

The team were in England for the World Rugby Under 20s Championship, which was being held in Manchester.

After beating the likes of France, South Africa and Japan in their pool matches, Argentina were beaten by Ireland in the semi finals before they beat South Africa again to secure third place in the tournament.

Grassby says the children will have gained valuable experience from their encounter with the Argentinian side.

“We do a lot of work with the RFU when it comes to giving opportunities for schools to come down and enjoy special coaching sessions,” he said.

“Part of the team coming over to England for the tournament was to engage with the local community and we were asked if we wanted to host it.

“It was a really good turnout and the players seemed to enjoy it as much as the kids.

“The lessons the children will take from this will be so valuable, getting the chance to meet guys who are professional athletes and represent their country doesn’t come along very often.

“It was an excellent day for everyone involved with the club.”
