MARTIN Poste has warned his players not to let up after a 15th successive league victory installed Northwich as favourites to be promoted as champions.

The director of rugby says Blacks want to avoid finishing second following agonising defeats in two play-off matches since 2010.

A 39-28 success at Glossop last week leaves them six points clear at the South Lancs/Cheshire Division One summit with half-a-dozen matches left to play.

“We’re not under pressure,” he insisted.

“Nobody expected us to be there, including us! We’re the unfashionable ones; little old Northwich ‘doing a Leicester’.

“But there’s no use shouting now because we’ve work to do.

“This is when I need my experienced guys to use their know-how, to manage games we need to win.”

Among the obstacles to overcome are a tricky-looking trip to sixth-placed Anselmians, a derby at Winnington Park and, potentially, a winner-takes-all clash with West Park on the season’s final afternoon.

Bowdon, who demolished Northwich’s neighbours last time out, visit Moss Farm tomorrow, Saturday.

Poste said: “We’ve proven we can be consistent, and will need to keep on doing so for a bit longer yet.

“And I’ve already asked these lads; ‘do you want to be champions or runners-up?’ I’ll get my answer in the next few weeks.

“Glossop made us work, as I knew they would, and other sides are going to do the same.

“That’s where the support we had from our followers at the weekend can make a difference.

“For a small club like ours to have that many supporters watch us at an away game says a lot. It really does.”

Following their latest success, Northwich have now equalled a winning sequence from 2006-07, coincidentally a campaign that ended with them finishing first in the same section.

They drew the next match, but reached the end of the season unbeaten.

Kick off at Moss Farm is 3pm.
