HEAVY rain ruined the chance of any sport taking place in mid Cheshire on Saturday.

Witton Albion’s crunch clash with fellow play-offs contenders Worksop Town was postponed after torrential overnight rain left the playing surface covered in puddles.

It is the second aborted attempt to host a match at Wincham Park this week, although thick fog put paid to Tuesday’s Mid Cheshire FA Senior Cup semi final against Winsford United.

Blues’ wait to play a match enters a third week following the postponement of their scheduled home encounter with Glossop North End in the North West Counties League.

Lloyd Morrison’s men have not been on the field since losing to Runcorn Town in the FA Vase a fortnight ago.

In the Cheshire League, matches at Barnton, Lostock Gralam and Middlewich Town fell foul of the weather along with champions Knutsford’s trip to Warrington to play Eagle.

Division Two table-toppers Rudheath had been due at Sandbach United.

Three scheduled games in the Crewe and District League, involving Cuddington, Rudheath reserves and Winnington, went the same way.

Football was not the only sport affected though.

Northwich rugby club’s first team had been set to close the calendar year at home to Midlands One West title favourites Worcester Wanderers, but the pitch at Moss Farm was flooded too.
