SPEEDWORKS Motorsport will target a season-best result in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship’s final race at Silverstone this weekend.

Piers and Ron Johnson are again on driving duty, buoyed by a top ten finish behind the wheel of the Northwich outfit’s Corvette Z06R last time out.

“It would be nice to sign off on a high,” said team principal Christian Dick.

“In many ways the campaign is ending at the wrong time for us as our best results have been in the most recent races.”

The duo has brought the 560bhp machine home among the first ten finishers in three of the past five races, only a diff failure at Rockingham ruining their run of form.

But a two-hours race, including mandatory fuel and driver stops, on Saturday provides the perfect chance to better a seventh place finish at Spa in July.

Dick said: “A longer race distance suits us as the Corvette maintains a strong pace over a series of laps, while it perhaps struggles to match the speed of a Ferrari on a single circuit.

“We’d have loved to have hit the ground running from the first race, but for one reason or another it’s not worked out that way.

“That said we were robbed of fifth place [at Donington Park last month] by a safety car, which was another really promising run.

“I was made up for Piers and Ron as they felt their luck had changed at Spa only for us then to have the nightmare we did at Rockingham.”

No fewer than a dozen drivers still have a chance of clinching the GT3 class title at the end of Saturday’s race.

Father and son pair Jim and Glynn Geddie (CRS Racing Ferrari) have an eight-points advantage over closest rivals Duncan Cameron and Matt Griffin (MTECH Ferrari).

But Audi pair Mike Guasch and Matt Bell (United Autosports Audi) and reigning champion David Ashburn (Trackspeed Porsche) are contenders too.

“I have no idea who to put my money on,” said championship manager Benjamin Franassovicci.

“To reach the final round with 12 drivers able to win is a great way to end the season. Only real teamwork will come out on top.”

Two 50-minutes free practice sessions take place tomorrow, Friday, at 0900 and 1120 respectively.

Qualifying is at 1040 on Saturday, followed by a two-hours race at 1555.
