SIMON Shaw has his sights set on racing against Britain’s fastest drivers this summer after being picked as one of the UK’s rising stars.
The sport’s leading newspaper, Motorsport News, ranked the Dutton ace at number two in their list of the top ten saloon car pilots, prompting him to eye a place in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) next season.
“I’ve had a great year and for that to be recognised [in this way] is the cherry on top of the cake,” he said.
Shaw won seven races in AmD Technik’s SEAT Leon Cupra on his way to winning the Dunlop Sport Maxx Championship – regarded as a stepping stone to the BTCC – last year.
That form earned the former Dunlop Race Academy winner the overall drivers’ title at the third attempt.
He was a class winner in 2008.
He added: “We’ve yet to decide on plans for 2010.
“It would be fantastic to defend the title, but we’re also looking at a potential deal to compete in the BTCC.”
To do that Shaw will need further financial backing.
