STEVE Lloyd says there is no secret to an upturn in fortune for Barnton in the North West Counties League’s top flight, writes Matt Turner.

A five-match unbeaten run is the result of picking the same players week in, week out, according to the Villagers’ boss.

Their improvement will be tested during a visit from table-toppers Runcorn Town later today.

“We’ve a settled side now,” he said.

“Earlier on in the season, I think our goalkeeper and centre forward were the only regulars.

“There has been lots of change, for various reasons, and we’ve revamped the squad.

“It’s still gelling, but we’re looking at things at lot more positively than we were a few weeks ago.

“You can see the difference that having a bit of form and confidence makes.”

Barnton have risen to 16th in the table, and kick off this afternoon’s contest eight points clear of the Premier Division’s relegation zone.

A 1-0 defeat of New Mills a fortnight ago means they have collected 13 points from the past 15 on offer.

It also marked the first time this term that the Villagers have kept successive clean sheets.

Lloyd said: “It’s often said that 40 points is a marker to be safe, so that’s our target.

“We’ve some work to do yet to get there.

“To shut out sides in two successive games is fantastic, and teams now know they have to work hard to score against us.”

He welcomes back wide man Ryan Malone this afternoon.

The winger is one of a number of players – Danny Meadowcroft, James McShane, Jason McShane and Jordan Stafford are others – who have returned to Townfield Lane in recent weeks.

All played a part in Barnton’s successful promotion bid last season.

“Those guys have played here before, but haven’t necessarily worked with me,” added Lloyd.

“They have a lot of experience though, which is what we need at this level.

“There’s a decent blend with our young players, and I can’t be unhappy with the squad we’ve got here now.”

Kick off on Saturday is at 3pm.
