BARNTON secured promotion to the North West Counties League’s top flight for the first time after winning Saturday’s play-offs final.

They had to be patient against Bacup Borough at Townfield, where Jason McShane’s header from close range put the Villagers in front during extra time.

The rivals had played out a goalless stalemate over 90 minutes.

Goalkeeper Richie Mottram then stretched fully to his right to parry Adrian Bellamy’s shot in the closing stages.

From Barnton’s next attack, substitute Ryan Malone steered in a second via an upright after fellow replacement Callum Scott had sent a pass in his direction.

The hosts will now play derbies against neighbours 1874 Northwich and Winsford United next season.

For former chairman Ian Ross, a committee member since stepping down in February, it was an emotional occasion.

He arrived at the club in the summer of 2012 after being appointed co-manager with Kevin Towey.

During the previous season, Barnton had finished bottom in the Cheshire League’s second tier after winning only two matches.

Four years on, the Villagers are celebrating one of the most successful campaigns in their illustrious history.

They lifted the Reusch Division One Cup last month following a penalty shoot-out success against Hanley, then claimed third spot in the table.

A 4-1 victory in Monday’s play-offs semi final, during which substitute Towey scored a hat-trick as they came from behind to win after extra time, set up today’s date with Bacup.

The hosts duly edged a close encounter played in front of a bumper crowd – their biggest since switching to the league – at a sun-drenched Townfield.
