IT takes something special to capture the imagination of two former England internationals.

But that was all in an afternoon’s work for Barnton skipper Colin Quirk, who has won the Budweiser Dream Goal competition for his spectacular effort against Daisy Hill last August.

In a series of video clips on the beer manufacturer’s Facebook page, SKY Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Gary Neville analyse Quirk’s winning effort for the Villagers.

The 29-year-old collects the ball on the halfway line, exchanges passes with a teammate then feigns to shoot before opting to nonchalantly lob the visitors’ goalkeeper instead.

“It’s a sensational goal,” said former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Redknapp.

“Quirky, I take my hat off to you.”

Quirk was not surprised to score such a goal; friends’ comments on his own Facebook feed suggest ‘wonder strikes’ are the norm for the Barnton man, but he was taken aback to receive a phone call from

Redknapp and Manchester United legend Neville.

“I was made up when I found out I’d won,” said Quirk. “The grandkids will be seeing that one!"

“I got a call from the producer and he said he would put the Sky Sports panel on. I was thinking ‘Who is that?’ then I heard Jamie’s voice!

The goal came three minutes into the North West Counties League fixture, and Quirk admits he adopted an unusually deep position to start the move.

“I normally play the number 10 role just behind the forward,” he added.

“I’m not sure why I was that deep, probably trying to get on the ball.

“But I got back in my normal lazy role and on the clip it shows my ‘fake’ shot, but the truth is the ball was stuck under my feet a bit!

“I was thinking of toe-poking it, but saw the keeper’s position and the scoop was a split-second thing.”

Redknapp added: “His technique is good. I love the fact he plays off his left and right foot. He’s involved all the way through – magnificent.”

Quirk has enjoyed the reaction to his goal, with thousands of ‘shares’ online and even his colleagues at Virgin talking about the effort.

But the forward, who has spent four seasons at Townfield, has warned his teammates he will be trying everything to retain his title next year.

“I keep seeing people showing each other in the office at work and I’m walking round with a big smile on my face,” he laughed.

“I’ll have to make sure the cameras are there next season. The lads will be sick of me – I’ll be trying halfway line jobs and everything!”
