Blue Barrel fall short in bid to upset Premier Division giants St Joseph's

THERE were no fewer than 98 goals across 13 ties in the first round of the Mid-Cheshire Sunday League Cup, writes Mike Alcock.

Underdogs Broadhurst won 7-4 at FC Lion, where Chris McCan netted two, but a hat-trick from Adam Davies was not enough for Blue Barrel in their bid to upset Premier Division outfit St Joseph’s.

They eventually lost 6-4 after extra time.

Matty Davies scored twice for Saxons as they put out fellow top tier team Holmes Chapel at Knights Grange.

Elsewhere Nick Newman scored a treble as Forest Road overcame a spirited Bulls Head 4-3, for whom Shaun Gurney bagged a brace.

Steve Jenyon’s double sent Cranford up to second spot in the Premier Division in the day’s only league encounter as the Knutsford outfit edged out Rifleman by the odd goal in three.
