CARL Macauley has claimed tomorrow’s meeting with Shaw Lane isn’t decisive, but will challenge his players to demonstrate their promotion credentials against the league leaders.

Witton sit third in the table at kick-off, nine points adrift of their guests with a game in hand.

“It’s a chance for us to show what we’re about,” said the Albion manager.

“There are so many games left to play, points to be won and others dropped, that it’s foolish to think one thing or another will be certain at full-time.

“We know the incentive, and that’s to get closer to them and in turn apply a bit of pressure.

“But they’ll look at it in the same way, I’m sure.

“No side has beaten us at our place in the league this season, and they’ll be determined to be the first. It’s a party they’ll want to spoil!

“And of course they know if they win then it’s a longer road we’ll have to take to catch them.”

He told the Guardian he expects an open contest, and dismissed a suggestion that Shaw Lane would be happy to return to South Yorkshire with a share of the spoils.

Macauley added: “I’ve watched them a couple of times this season, and they’re set up to score goals.

“I don’t expect them to approach this game any differently, and why would they? They’re in good form, and winning regularly right now.”

Albion missed an opportunity close a gap to top spot when they were held to a goalless stalemate by Lincoln United on Saturday.

The Whites went closest to scoring in the first half when Andy Toyne’s attempt struck an upright, while Anthony Gardner did the same at the other end.

“For me, it was a point gained,” said Macauley.

“We didn’t play well, and looked flat in the first half. They shaded it.

“There was more about us in the second period, but we just couldn’t run up a head of steam. A draw was fair in the end.

“I’m happy to have kept a clean sheet as well – it’s what every manager will say after a game like that.”
