MANAGER Ian Street got the response from his 1874 Northwich players that he will have wanted following a Boxing Day derby defeat against Winsford United.

The outcome was not in doubt from the moment Tyler Edwards opened the scoring on 11 minutes, turning in Tom Bailey’s cross from close range.

Bailey then doubled the visitors’ lead after half an hour when he fired past Lairds’ goalkeeper Dave Parkinson from outside the penalty area.

The home team’s custodian blocked Sam Hind’s shot with a boot, while Dahrius Waldron blasted from a free kick.

At the other end, Joel Douglas shot high when well-placed.

1874’s third goal arrived on 56 minutes, a 100th conceded by the North West Counties League Premier Division’s back-markers this season.

Substitute Paul Connor picked out Scott McGowan, and he was tripped by interval replacement Dquarne Lewis.

Bailey converted from the spot, sending Parkinson the wrong way.

Hind drilled with power through a crowd of players to make it 4-0 before Mark Jones marauded forward to claim a stylish fifth goal for 1874.

He started the move by playing the ball wide for Connor, who weighted a return pass perfectly for Jones to sweep past Parkinson without breaking stride.

Joe Byrne’s attempt was deflected off-target by a defender, while Northwich goalkeeper Greg Hall was called into action to thwart Mark Bainbridge’s close-range attempt.

Cammell Laird notched a consolation with time running out, when Lawrence Reilly scored a penalty after Josh Maldon was fouled.

However 1874 had the final say when substitute Adam Whitlock diverted Danny Thomas’ header from a corner into the net.
