1874 NORTHWICH overturned an interval deficit at Padiham on Saturday to secure a spot in the Macron Cup second round.

Their reward is a home date with lower-ranked AFC Blackpool.

Despite not being at their best, the visitors went closest to scoring during the early exchanges.

Sam Hind headed debutant Sam Hare’s set piece onto the woodwork after quarter of an hour, while goalkeeper Mike Donlan was alert to block Ryan Mitchell’s header shortly afterwards.

Padiham responded, and 1874 custodian Greg Hall reacted smartly to deny Aaron Taylor.

However he could do nothing to prevent James Dean from opening the scoring with a powerful header.

Ian Street’s side improved after the interval, dominating from the outset.

Hind was unlucky again when his thunderous attempt hit the underside of the crossbar, while Tom Bailey steered off-target after reaching the loose ball.

Hall kept out Taylor’s attempt at the other end – a reminder the Storks posed a threat on the counter – before Matthew Russell restored parity with a rising drive from distance.

The full-back played a part in 1874’s second goal too, sliding a pass into Scott McGowan’s path.

He was tripped in shooting stride, and Bailey converted the resulting spot-kick by sending Donlan in the wrong direction.

The visitors were grateful to Mitchell, restored to the starting line-up following a ban, after he timed perfectly a challenge on Dean when the striker bore down on goal.

Hind got the goal his display deserved on 80 minutes, sending a sweetly-struck volley past Donlan from outside of the penalty area after Matthew Woolley’s diagonal pass picked him out.

Substitute Kieran Pickup crossed for Taylor, who nodded the ball down for substitute Mark Coyne to score, when Padiham reduced the deficit with time running out.

1874 turn their attention next to a league meeting with neighbours Barnton tomorrow, Tuesday.
