NORTHWICH Victoria could not prevent Tranmere Rovers from taking home the John King Memorial Trophy on a day when both clubs remembered their former manager.

King, Vics’ manager when they won the FA Trophy in 1984, died earlier this year.

The teams met for a friendly at Wincham Park on Saturday, a contest won by the National League outfit thanks to second-half goals from James Norwood and Dylan Vasselo.

Norwood, unmarked, netted on 55 minute when he drilled past goalkeeper Mason Springthorpe.

Rovers then settled the outcome with a quarter of an hour left, when youngster Vasselo’s sweetly-struck volley from the edge of the penalty area swerved into the net.

Player-manager Lee Duckworth was on target for Winsford United in a 2-0 win away to Midland League side Rocester.

Jon Jones doubled Blues’ tally in the second period, extending to four matches their unbeaten sequence this summer.

Three of those have ended in a victory.

1874 Northwich continue to impress, increasing to 18 their goals tally for pre-season following a 4-3 win at Conwy Borough.

Dave Bryan put the hosts ahead from close range, only for Stuart Wellstead to restore parity with a header from Scott McGowan’s cross.

He then kept calm to convert a penalty after McGowan was fouled.

Conwy rallied before the break, and Joe Chaplin’s spot kick hauled them level before Timmy Bigland burst clear to make it 3-2.

Bryan diverted the ball into his own net after an hour, then Sam Hind skipped around goalkeeper John Lynch to claim a decisive goal from Mark Jones’ assist.

Barnton, preparing for life in the North West Counties League’s top flight, recovered from a midweek defeat by beating Heswall.

New recruit Chris Bandell and Sam Houghton scored their goals in a 2-1 win against their West Cheshire League hosts.

Three Cheshire League teams – Lostock Gralam, Middlewich Town and Rudheath Social – suffered defeats.

Will Reid was on target for the Grey Lambs in a 3-1 reverse at Sandbach United, while Jack Bryning put Rudheath in front during their visit to Vauxhall Motors reserves.

The home team fought back though to win by the same score.

Middlewich, impressive in a 3-0 win at Helsby on Tuesday when Sam Wakefield, Sam O’Sullivan and James Smith scored their goals, went down 6-1 at home to highe-ranked Runcorn Linnets.

Freddie Potter scored a hat-trick.
