IAN Street has admitted he has made the most difficult decision of his tenure after recruiting a replacement for 1874 Northwich fans’ favourite Matthew Conkie.

The club announced on Saturday the arrival of former Glossop North End goalkeeper Greg Hall as successor to the 35-year-old.

“It’s a big call, probably the biggest I’ve made in my time here,” said the manager.

“That, and letting Lee Duckworth go in the summer.

“These aren’t just any lads; I consider them as friends.

“And nobody can dispute the contribution Conks had made in the past couple of years – he’s been brilliant for us.”

Conkie departs after making 119 starts for 1874 in all competitions, more than any other player.

He reached a century of appearances back in August.

Hall arrives at Barton Stadium after being picked as goalkeeper of the year by the North West Counties League for the past two seasons.

He left Glossop – promoted to the Northern Premier League as champions last season – a fortnight ago, initially registering with Ramsbottom.

Street said: “We’ve had the second best keeper at his level in recent seasons, now we’ve the number one.

“Sometimes you have to be decisive, and act quickly.

“You always do it in the best interests of the group, and this is no different.

“We’ve got ourselves in a great position, and want to be able to stay there as long as we can.

“Every manager will tell you he only signs players who are better than what he has, and they mean it.

“That’s the position you’re in, and you’ll be judged on those choices.”

Hall was in line to make his debut earlier today against AFC Darwen, but the match was postponed after heavy rainfall left the playing surface at Barton Stadium waterlogged.

Instead he will appear for the first time at Bootle next weekend.

Jack Cookson, who has had spells with Premier Division rivals Winsford and Alsager this season, will act as back-up.

They trained together on Thursday.

Meanwhile 1874 Northwich’s Men United Cup clash with Ashton Athletic has been rearranged for Tuesday, December 22, kick off 7.45pm.
