CARL Macauley says he has drawn up a list of players he feels can make his Witton Albion team stronger.

But he also warned supporters he will not compromise and recruit just to boost numbers.

“We’re fighting hard to get lads on board,” he said.

“We’re talking to them, and have had good initial responses.

“But there are hurdles to get over even when you want to make changes quickly, whether that’s waiting for seven-day notice periods to expire or international clearance to go through.”

The former Marine boss was able to name only three substitutes, only two of them outfield players, for last weekend’s FA Trophy tie against Radcliffe Borough.

Darren Chadwick missed the 2-1 defeat through illness, while on-loan attacker Liam Davies was refused permission to play by parent club Tranmere.

Another forward, Joel Brownhill, has signed for Ashton Athletic on dual-registration terms.

Macauley told the Guardian that midfielder Gary Roberts, who has been made available for loan, has played his last game for the club.

He added: “We’ve identified who we want, and I’m confident they will improve things when they arrive.

“We can’t just bring in anybody, what’s the point?”

Macauley, who has overseen three defeats since being appointed as Scott Dundas’ successor last month, believes the team he has inherited is capable of more too.

He said: “I’ve said it previously, but confidence is really low.

“But there were things to be positive about at the weekend, particularly during the second half.

“We created chances, and got that first goal.

“We know we need to control games better than we have done, and to make a bit more happen in the final third. That will come.”

Witton visit Ossett Albion this Saturday, opponents they have beaten twice already this season in league and cup.

They will kick off the contest placed 16th in the Northern Premier League’s Division One North.
