A FOOTBALL supporter hopes fellow fans will back his idea to help neighbours in need.

Phil Burgess, who follows 1874 Northwich, has organised a collection this weekend of items he plans to donate to Winsford-based charity Mid Cheshire Foodbank.

Chairman Paul Stockton is taking a trailer to Barton Stadium, where the team hosts Silsden in a league game on Saturday, to fill with contributions.

Mid Cheshire Foodbank distributes non-perishable, in-date food or meals to people struggling to make ends meet.

In little more than two years, it has fed close to 5,000 people - well over a third of those children.

“It’s a one-off thing for now,” said Burgess.

“But there’s a possibility it can be repeated in the future if it proves to be successful. We’re sure it will be.”

He said Mid Cheshire Foodbank needed the following items most:

Milk (UHT or powdered), sugar, fruit juice, sponge pudding (in a tin), tea bags, instant coffee, tinned fish, fruit, meat or vegetables, jam, soap, shampoo and toothpaste

It is not the first time Burgess has suggested something to bring together 1874 fans.

Last season, his Bring A Mate initiative attracted the biggest crowd to watch a home league game at Barton Stadium when Formby were the visitors.
