GARY Burnett scored the game’s only goal in the first half to help Northwich Victoria record a first league win of the season last night.

He was sent clear by midfielder Stuart Cook, who had tackled his opposite number Andy Keogh in Mossley territory, before shooting across goalkeeper Liam Higginbotham.

Few chances followed, though Josh Amis might have doubled the visitors’ lead when he headed weakly with only the home team’s custodian to beat.

At the other end, Mo Ali blocked Michael Fish’s effort before Steve Foster flicked the rebound too close to net-minder Tim Deasy.

Burnett went close shortly after the break, again after Cook had supplied an assist, only for Higginbotham to save after two attempts.

Keogh ought to have restored parity for Mossley, but shot tamely from Foster’s pass.

Burnett was similarly red-faced with eight minutes left when, after poking the ball beyond Mossley’s goalkeeper, he slipped while steadying himself to send it into an empty net.

Northwich, who played out a goalless draw with Kendal Town on the campaign’s opening day, visit Ossett Albion this Saturday.

Meanwhile Warrington Town will be their guests, at Flixton’s Valley Road, on Bank Holiday Monday.
