IAN Street recruited a player from a promotion rival on Saturday, then warned he may strengthen his squad further before a signings deadline next week.

Sakeel Abdullah, an attacking midfielder, completed a move from Nelson in time to be named as a substitute for 1874 Northwich’s 2-1 win against higher-ranked Abbey Hey in the North West Counties League Challenge Cup.

He is a player the manager has wanted in his group since the season’s early stages.

“Sakeel adds something a bit different to what we have already,” said Street.

“He can dribble and go past defenders, which will add to our threat when we attack.

“He caught our eye while playing against us for Daisy Hill, only he moved to Nelson from there. I’m happy to have him at last.”

Abdullah has hit the net 10 times to date between spells at both clubs.

And he may not be the only new arrival before the end of the month, according to Street.

He added: “I’d like us to be stronger and have spoken to a couple of players who have played for a club in the division above ours – a midfielder and a defender.

“If we can get them in, we’ll be set for the run-in.”

Another newcomer, forward David Short, has been a regular scorer for AFC Leek Town in the Staffordshire County Senior League this season.

He was on target at the weekend during his first start for the club.

Meanwhile attacker Dean McGregor has been given permission to seek playing time elsewhere.
