WINNINGTON Park’s batsmen answered their captain’s rallying call to progress at Winsford’s expense in the Cheshire League’s T20 Cup on Thursday.

Alec Butcher had told the Guardian earlier this week that a knockout head-to-head with their neighbours represented an opportunity to put runs on the board.

Butcher (43 off 36 balls) led the way at the top of the order as the hosts posted 170-3 at the Rec.

Jonny Wales (77no off 53 balls) and Australian Tyron Young (27) put on 80 runs for the third wicket to boost their team’s tally after they had won the toss.

Winsford reached 155-8 in reply, although a half-century from captain Michael Dean (80 off 46 balls) – which included 10 fours and four maximums – raised hopes early in their innings.

He added 95 runs for the second wicket with Craig Webb (23) before both were dismissed by Sam Barnes (3-36).

James Tierney (32no) was the only other batsman to contribute as wickets fell regularly from that moment onwards.

Young (1-28), Iain Connor (1-18), Stuart Moniz (1-14) and Jitenkumar Parmar (1-21) all weighed in.

Barnton put behind them the disappointment of a heavy defeat at Stockport Georgians last weekend when they won by 21 runs at Frodsham.

They put 154-7 on the board after winning the toss with Paul Coot, Jack Whalley and James Hodgkinson (all 30) setting them on a course towards a sizeable total.

Elliot Wright (3-22) claimed a hat-trick for the hosts.

Frodsham made it to 133-4 in reply after openers Tom Wilkinson (24) and Nick Brimble (43) – who was dismissed by Jordan Cobley (1-24) – had showed early promise.

Aiden Malley took 2-14 for the visitors.

Kingsley, Middlewich and Oakmere have byes to the second round.
