NORTHWICH began their latest bid to win the Cheshire Shield with a thrilling one-run victory against Lindow, rivals from the Cheshire County League, on Sunday.

Chasing 244 to win, the visitors to Moss Farm were denied when captain James Plant ran out tail-ender Tim Young.

It sent his side through to the competition’s last eight.

Lindow’s initial momentum in reply was halted when Matthew Dufty (2-19 off nine overs) removed both openers, including Atiq Uz-Zaman (51).

Gladwin Cherian (3-62) weighed in too, dismissing Major Khan (48), as Northwich battled for control.

They had posted 243-6 after winning the toss, boosted by Glinoj Cherian (27) and brother Gladwin (51) sharing in a stand for the first wicket worth 70.

Dufty (35), Tharusha Fernando (27) and Mark Walker (38) – who added 58 together for the fourth wicket – all contributed before Plant (22no off 24 balls) scored quickly in the closing stages.

Northwich will take on Stockport Trinity, handed a bye after Prestbury conceded, in next month’s quarter-finals as a reward.
