BARNTON have suffered a first defeat since they were promoted to the Cheshire League’s top flight, losing by nine wickets at Stockport Georgians on Saturday.

Adam Garrod (24) was the only batsman to offer resistance as they were skittled for 61 after losing the toss, James Locke (6-15) ripping through their order after openers Aidan Malley and Callum Doyle appeared to weather an early storm.

Neil Langham took the only wicket to fall as the hosts cruised to their target inside 15 overs, led by a quick-scoring Hayden Bailey (39no).

Winnington Park continue to lead the way in Division Two following a five-wicket success at home to Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge.

Alec Butcher’s men have now won seven of their eight fixtures to date this term.

Iain Connor (2-37) took two wickets with the first three balls of the contest, then Sam Barnes (2-26) added a third in his opening over.

Philip Jones (46) and Angelo Shepherd (37) led a recovery with a 57-run partnership before Jonny Wales (2-17) claimed their wickets – Peter Room holding on to catches on both occasions.

Phill Amatiello (4-33) then took care of the lower order as the visitors were bowled out for 119.

Winnington initially made hard work of their reply, struggling at 46-4 before Martin Evans (70no including 11 fours) and Barnes (15no) shared in a 37-run stand that finished the job at 120-5.

Butcher said: “As a team we’ve learned how to win even when we’re not at our best.

“We weren’t as clinical as I would have liked, but will learn from that.

“There was a fantastic energy in the field, superbly backed up by our bowlers.”

Oakmere have won back-to-back matches after successfully chasing 147 to beat Ashley at Overdale Lane.

Guy Groves (5-51) and Nick Guest (3-50) were the pick of their attack as they bowled out the visitors for 146 after winning the toss.

In-form Australian Harrison Jones (73no) struck a dozen boundaries after tea to lead his side to victory at 152-5, with support from Rick Lyons (29).

They rise to sixth in Division Two as a reward.
