Review of Week One

REIGNING champions Oulton Park had to settle for a draw on the opening day of the season.

Theirs was one of two drawn matches - the other four managed positive outcomes - in the ECB Premier League.

They chalked up an impressive 272-6 at Heaton Mersey but were unable to force victory against their promoted hosts.

Quickly slipping in to top gear were Danny Leech (90), Jonny Kettle (76) and captain Nathan Dumelow (65) as Oulton piled up their massive score.

Mersey replied with a dogged 165-7, Aussie all rounder Brenton McDonald left on 99 not out while Guy Emmett returned 4-46.

Points: Heaton Mersey 7, OP 16.

THE league's best individual performance of the day came from Tattenhall's young Trinidad paceman Damien Lewis in their 31-run win at Middlewich in Division Two.

Tatters posted 156, John Gibbon top scoring with 45, while Middlewich bowler Tony Gledhill returned 4-54.

Lewis then got stuck into the hosts' batsmen, claiming the first nine wickets before dismissing Middlewich's last man with a blistering catch at mid-on having earlier bowled another batsman off a no ball.

His final figures were 9-52, which slots in as the 16th best performance in the league's record books.

After being 89-9, Middlewich were all out for 125 on a day when umpire Brian Jones saved plaudits for Haddon Field groundsman Geoff Tomlinson for his pre-season efforts.

Points: Middlewich 7, Tattenhall 22.

LOWEST score of the day came from Winnington Park, bowled out for a meagure 60 at Irby, see left.

Steve Hurworth did most of the damage, taking 5-33 in his side's 113-run victory.

Earlier Irby had totalled 173, Phil Rennie hitting 41 while Australian debutant Sean O'Neill helped himself to 4-51.

Points: Irby 23, Winnington Park 5.
